# Internet in Marrakech: How to Get Online, Coverage and Costs

> Is there internet in Marrakech? 4G coverage by neighbourhood, WiFi in riads, SIM, eSIM and pocket WiFi compared with prices, plus day trips and a full FAQ.

Published: 2026-10-02 | Updated: 2026-10-12

The short answer

**Yes, there is internet in Marrakech, and the mobile network is the good part.** 4G covers the whole city, including the medina, and 5G has been live since November 2025. The weak link is the WiFi inside riads and older buildings. You have five ways to get online: free WiFi, a local SIM, a travel eSIM, roaming on your home plan, or a pocket WiFi router. For most visitors the pocket WiFi is the best of the five: unlimited data with no throttling, your own private network and up to 10 devices connected, delivered to you in Marrakech for €4.90 a day.

Most guides to “internet in Morocco” are written for the whole country. This one is about one city, because that is where most trips start and where we work every day: we deliver routers to riads, hotels and the arrivals hall at Menara airport, and collect them again when people leave. So it contains two things you will not find elsewhere: how many 4G masts have been recorded around each Marrakech neighbourhood and each classic day trip, and what our own bookings say about how visitors actually get connected.

It is long on purpose. Use the headings to jump to your question, or go straight to the [FAQ](#faq-internet-marrakech) at the end.

**1,971**Maroc Telecom 4G cells recorded within 10 km of the centre

**3 networks**Maroc Telecom, Orange and inwi, all with 4G and 5G

**39th**Morocco’s world rank for mobile speed, first in Africa

**€4.90**per day for a router shared by up to 10 devices

## Is the internet good in Marrakech?

The question has two answers, because there are two networks.

**The mobile network is good.** In Ookla’s Speedtest Global Index for the fourth quarter of 2025, Morocco ranked 39th in the world for mobile speed and first in Africa. In Marrakech that means maps load at once, video calls hold, and you can upload photos from a rooftop café without thinking about it. All three operators, Maroc Telecom, Orange and inwi, cover the city with 4G.

**The WiFi inside buildings is a lottery.** Morocco’s fixed broadband ranked around 105th in the same index, with a median of 56 Mbps. That line is what feeds the WiFi in your riad, and a riad is a courtyard house with walls half a metre thick: the signal that is fine in the courtyard is often gone two rooms away. We explain the mechanics in [is the WiFi actually any good in Morocco](https://pocketwifimorocco.com/is-wifi-good-in-morocco/).

So the practical rule for Marrakech is simple: plan to rely on mobile data, and treat building WiFi as a bonus.

## The five ways to get internet in Marrakech

Costs for a five-day stay, which is the typical length of the rentals we deliver. eSIM prices are Airalo’s and Holafly’s own euro prices, read on their sites on 8 October 2026. The SIM price is indicative: operators change their passes often, so check it in the shop.

| Option | One person, 5 days | Four people, 5 days | What to know |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| **Pocket WiFi router**delivered in Marrakech | €24.50 | €24.50 in total, €6.13 each | One price for up to 10 devices, laptops included. Unlimited data, no throttling. €50 deposit pre-authorised, not taken. |
| **Free WiFi**riad, café, airport | Free | Free | Only where you are sitting. Nothing in the street, the souks or a taxi. |
| **Local SIM**Maroc Telecom, Orange or inwi | From 20 Dh for the SIM at Orange, plus a pass: 20 Dh for 2 GB over 7 days | The same for each phone | Cheap for one person, with a data bundle that runs out. Passport needed, one SIM per phone, and your phone must be unlocked. |
| **Travel eSIM**bought before you fly | €15 at Airalo for 3 GB over 7 days; €21.90 at Holafly for 5 days unlimited | €60 at Airalo; €87.60 at Holafly | Nothing to do on arrival. Needs an eSIM-compatible, unlocked phone. Sharing to a laptop is limited on unlimited plans. |
| **Roaming**your home plan | Depends entirely on your operator | Morocco is outside the EU roaming zone. Check your Morocco rate before you fly. |

**Our recommendation is the pocket WiFi, and for most trips it is the best option.** It is the only one of the five that is unlimited, private, shared by the whole party and usable by every device, laptops included, with no queue and nothing to set up. A local SIM or a small eSIM can cost a little less for one person who only needs maps and messages on one unlocked phone. In every other case the router gives you more for the money.

### 1. Free WiFi

Almost every riad, hotel, café and restaurant in Marrakech offers free WiFi, and Menara airport has it too. In modern hotels in Guéliz and Hivernage it is usually solid. In medina riads it depends on where your room is. It is shared and unencrypted, so keep banking for your own connection, and remember it ends at the door: the moment you step into the souks you are offline.

### 2. A local SIM card

Maroc Telecom, Orange and inwi all sell prepaid SIMs to visitors, at their shops in the airport baggage hall and in agencies around the city. By law every SIM is registered to an identity document, so bring your passport. It is cheap for one person with an unlocked phone. The costs are the queue, the paperwork, data sold in bundles that run out, and that it is one SIM per phone. Details are in our guides to [getting online at Marrakech airport](https://pocketwifimorocco.com/marrakech-airport-getting-online/) and [SIM cards in Morocco](https://pocketwifimorocco.com/sim-card-in-morocco-best-operators-and-plans/).

### 3. A travel eSIM

You buy it online, scan a QR code and land already connected. On 8 October 2026 Airalo listed 1 GB for 3 days at €5.50 and 3 GB for 7 days at €15; Holafly listed unlimited data at €13.90 for 3 days, €21.90 for 5 and €29.90 for 7. Two limits matter. Your phone has to be eSIM-compatible and unlocked. And an unlimited eSIM is unlimited on that phone only: Holafly states you can share 1 GB a day as a hotspot, which is not much for a laptop. See [can you connect a laptop to a travel eSIM](https://pocketwifimorocco.com/esim-hotspot-limit-morocco/). If an eSIM is the right fit for you, we sell one at [esimmaroc.com](https://www.esimmaroc.com/en/).

### 4. Roaming on your home plan

Morocco is not part of the EU’s roam-like-at-home area, so a European plan does not automatically work at home prices here. Some plans include Morocco or sell a pass; many charge heavily. Check before you board, and switch data roaming off if you are unsure. We compared the UK networks in [does your phone plan work in Morocco](https://pocketwifimorocco.com/does-my-phone-plan-work-in-morocco/).

### 5. A pocket WiFi router

A pocket WiFi is a small battery router with a Maroc Telecom 4G connection inside. You switch it on, everyone joins its WiFi with the password, and it goes where you go: riad, souks, taxi, day trip. Ours is €4.90 per day, VAT included, with unlimited data and no throttling, up to 10 devices at once, up to 8 hours per charge, and a two-day minimum. We deliver it charged to your riad, hotel, Airbnb or Menara airport and collect it at the end, free both ways. Full details are on the [pocket WiFi in Marrakech](https://pocketwifimorocco.com/pocket-wifi-marrakech/) page.

## The advantages of a pocket WiFi in Marrakech

This is what you get with the router that the other four options do not give you together.

#### Truly unlimited internet

- No daily allowance, no total cap and no throttling at any point in the rental.

- Stream, video-call, upload your photos and work online: nobody is counting gigabytes.

- The speed on the last day is the speed on the first day.

#### Your own private WiFi

- A password-protected network that only your devices join.

- Not shared with the other guests, unlike riad, café or airport WiFi.

- Banking, work and bookings stay off public networks.

#### One price for everyone

- Up to 10 devices at the same time for €4.90 a day in total.

- Phones, laptops, tablets and consoles all count the same.

- You pay once online. The bill does not change however much you use.

#### Works with every device

- Locked phones, older phones and phones without eSIM connect like any other.

- No SIM to swap and nothing to install: you keep your own number and your WhatsApp.

- Laptops and tablets get the full connection, with no sharing limit.

#### No queue, no paperwork

- Delivered charged and switched on to your riad, hotel, Airbnb or Menara airport.

- No passport registration and no shop visit.

- Collected at the end. Delivery and collection are free.

#### It goes where you go

- Pocket-sized, with up to 8 hours of battery per charge.

- Up to 300 Mbps on Maroc Telecom 4G, the network with the most recorded cells in every Marrakech area we checked.

- Works on day trips and across Morocco, wherever that network reaches.

In one line: unlimited data, a private network of your own, and one fixed price for the whole party.

## Coverage in Marrakech, neighbourhood by neighbourhood

We counted the 4G cells recorded within one kilometre of the places visitors actually stay and walk, for each of the three networks, using the same open dataset as our [coverage map](https://pocketwifimorocco.com/pocket-wifi-morocco-coverage/). A cell is one antenna sector on a mast; more cells means more capacity and fewer dead corners.
4G cells recorded within 1 km of each point (1.5 km for the airport, 2 km for the Palmeraie). Mozilla Location Service open export, measurements 2015–2024. All three networks have added masts since, so read these as a floor, not a ceiling.

| Area | Maroc Telecom | Orange | inwi | In practice |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| **Jemaa el-Fna and the souks** | 147 | 133 | 59 | Strong |
| **Bahia Palace and the Mellah** | 127 | 108 | 45 | Strong |
| **Kasbah and Saadian Tombs** | 128 | 75 | 48 | Strong |
| **Bab Doukkala** | 148 | 55 | 56 | Strong |
| **Guéliz**Place du 16 Novembre | 216 | 57 | 59 | Strong |
| **Train station** | 197 | 52 | 44 | Strong |
| **Jardin Majorelle** | 136 | 32 | 41 | Strong |
| **Hivernage** | 92 | 33 | 36 | Strong |
| **Palmeraie** | 126 | 35 | 49 | Strong |
| **Menara airport** | 43 | 40 | 36 | Strong |

Three things stand out. Every neighbourhood on the list is well served by all three networks, so nobody in Marrakech is choosing between signal and no signal. Maroc Telecom has the most recorded cells at every one of the ten points, by a wide margin outside the old city: 216 against 57 and 59 in Guéliz. And the medina, which people expect to be the weak spot, is among the densest areas in the city. Our routers run on Maroc Telecom, which is why we chose it.

Signal is not the same as GPS

In the covered souks and the narrowest alleys of the medina, your connection usually holds while [the blue dot on your map drifts](https://pocketwifimorocco.com/google-maps-marrakech-medina/), because the phone loses sight of the sky. That is a satellite problem, not a network one. Download the Marrakech area for offline use in your maps app before you walk in, and use the connection for searching, messaging and calling your riad when you are lost.

## Riads and the medina: why the WiFi disappoints

A riad is built to keep heat out: thick earth or brick walls, rooms around a courtyard, often three floors. That is hard on a WiFi signal. Typically there is one router near reception, no repeaters upstairs, and [one line shared by every guest](https://pocketwifimorocco.com/riad-wifi-marrakech/). The usual complaint is not “there was no WiFi” but “it worked in the courtyard and not in my room”, and evenings are worst because everyone is back and streaming.

Mobile data does not have that problem, because the signal comes from masts outside rather than from one box downstairs. If you depend on being online in your room for [a call or for work](https://pocketwifimorocco.com/remote-work-marrakech-internet/), test the riad WiFi from the room when you arrive, and have your own connection ready. For longer stays, see [internet for a long stay or remote work](https://pocketwifimorocco.com/internet-morocco-long-stay-remote-work/).

## Arriving at Menara airport

The hour after landing is when you need a connection most: to message your driver, find the riad’s address, or order a taxi. At Menara you have three options on the spot.

- **Free airport WiFi.** Good enough to send a message. It stops at the terminal door.

- **The [operator shops](https://pocketwifimorocco.com/sim-card-marrakech/).** inwi lists a shop at the airport on its own website, and airport guides report counters for the three operators in the baggage reclaim hall. Opening hours are not published. Bring your passport and expect a queue when several flights land together.

- **A router waiting for you.** Book with your flight details and we meet you in the arrivals hall with the router charged and switched on. Close to half of our customers choose the airport as their delivery point. Details on the [Menara airport pocket WiFi](https://pocketwifimorocco.com/pocket-wifi-marrakech-menara-airport/) page.

## Day trips from Marrakech: where the signal holds

Most visitors leave the city at least once. The router, a local SIM or an eSIM all keep working outside Marrakech; what changes is how many masts there are. These are the Maroc Telecom figures for the classic excursions.
Maroc Telecom 4G cells recorded within 10 km of each destination (same dataset). The rating is our own, from the coverage map; where we have not rated a place we say so rather than guess.

| Day trip | 4G cells within 10 km | What to expect |
| --- | --- | --- |
| **Essaouira** | 110 | Strong Everything works. |
| **Aït Benhaddou** | 21 | Strong Everything works at the ksar. |
| **Tizi n’Tichka pass** | 31 | Patchy Signal at the pass itself, gaps on the climb. |
| **Lalla Takerkoust lake** | 25 | 4G recorded at the village (nearest cell 0.2 km). Not rated by us yet. |
| **Agafay desert** | 19 | 4G recorded in the area (nearest cell 0.5 km from Agafay village). Camps are spread out, so ask yours. Not rated by us yet. |
| **Ourika valley** | 6 | Patchy Maps and WhatsApp in the villages. |
| **Ouzoud waterfalls** | 6 | 4G recorded at the falls (nearest cell 0.2 km). Not rated by us yet. |
| **Oukaimeden** | 5 | Nearest recorded cell is 6.8 km away. Plan for gaps. |
| **Imlil** | 4 | Patchy Maps and WhatsApp in the village, little on the trails. |

The pattern: towns and main roads are fine, mountain valleys are thin, and the higher you climb the less you get. Download your maps before any Atlas day. For trips that continue to the Sahara, see [internet in the Sahara and the Atlas](https://pocketwifimorocco.com/internet-sahara-atlas-morocco/).

## Is there 5G in Marrakech?

Yes. Morocco launched 5G on 7 November 2025 with all three operators, and Marrakech is on Orange Maroc’s official list of 5G localities, as are Essaouira and Aït Ourir on the road to the Atlas. To use it you need a 5G phone and a plan that includes 5G: most travel eSIMs for Morocco are still sold as 4G. Our routers are 4G, at up to 300 Mbps, which is more than a group needs for maps, calls and streaming. More in [5G in Morocco](https://pocketwifimorocco.com/5g-in-morocco-rollout-benefits-and-economic-impact/).

## What you will actually use data for in Marrakech

- **Finding your riad.** Medina addresses are alleys without street numbers. Most riads send a map pin or meet you at the nearest gate, which needs a message from you when you arrive.

- **Maps in the souks.** The medina is where visitors get lost, and where a shared connection keeps a group together.

- **Taxis and transfers.** Ride-hailing apps and drivers on WhatsApp both need data at the kerb, exactly where café WiFi does not reach.

- **WhatsApp calls.** Voice and video calls work in Morocco without a VPN. We tested it on our own routers: see [do WhatsApp calls work in Morocco](https://pocketwifimorocco.com/whatsapp-calls-in-morocco/).

- **Translation and prices.** Looking up a word, a menu or a fair price takes almost no data but has to work on the spot.

- **Tickets and bookings.** Restaurants, hammams and excursions are increasingly booked online or by message.

None of that is heavy. Video is what eats data; our guide to [how much data you need for a week](https://pocketwifimorocco.com/how-much-data-do-you-need-in-morocco/) has the numbers.

## What our own deliveries in Marrakech show

We looked at every paid rental we delivered between February and September 2026. Three patterns are worth knowing if you are still deciding.

#### You can decide after you land

- More than one booking in three is made on the same day the router is wanted.

- More than half are made the same day or the day before.

- Same-day delivery is subject to availability, so earlier is safer in high season.

#### The airport is the favourite meeting point

- Close to half of all deliveries are at Menara airport.

- The rest go to hotels, villas and Airbnbs, then riads.

- The busiest delivery window is the afternoon, from noon to 17:00.

#### Five days is the typical rental

- The middle booking is 5 days; the shortest 2 and the longest 16.

- At 5 days the bill is €24.50, whatever the number of people.

- Every booking so far has been for a single router: one is enough for a family or a group of friends.

## Who the pocket WiFi is the best option for

Almost every kind of trip to Marrakech. These are the cases we deliver to most often.

#### Couples, friends and families

- With two phones, one router already costs less than two unlimited eSIMs, and the price does not rise with each extra person.

- Children’s tablets and consoles connect without a SIM of their own.

- Everyone stays reachable in the souks. See [internet for families and groups](https://pocketwifimorocco.com/family-group-internet-morocco/).

#### Groups, tours and events

- Up to 10 devices per router: a hen or stag weekend, a tour or a team shares one connection.

- One booking and one bill for the organiser.

- See [WiFi for group trips](https://pocketwifimorocco.com/group-trips-morocco-wifi/) and [WiFi for events in Marrakech](https://pocketwifimorocco.com/wifi-for-events-marrakech/).

#### Remote work and long stays

- Video meetings from your room, not only from the courtyard.

- Your laptop gets the full unlimited connection, with no hotspot allowance to watch.

- The same speed in week three as on day one.

#### Riad and villa stays

- A connection that does not depend on where the riad’s router sits.

- It works in your room, on the roof terrace and by the pool.

- Private: not shared with the other guests.

#### Late arrivals and first visits

- We meet you in the arrivals hall at Menara: online before the taxi rank.

- No counter, no passport registration, no settings to change at midnight.

- It also works with locked phones and phones without eSIM.

#### Day trips and road trips

- Maps, music and messages for the whole car on the way to the Atlas, Agafay or Essaouira.

- Add a power bank (€1.90 a day) for long days out and a car phone holder (€0.90 a day) for driving.

- Unlimited data: nobody rations the maps.

When another option is enough

One person, one unlocked phone, maps and messages only: a local SIM or a small eSIM will do. If your home plan includes Morocco, roaming needs no action at all. For everything else, take the router.

## How delivery works in Marrakech

- **Book online** with your dates and your address in Marrakech: riad, hotel, villa, Airbnb or Menara airport. Minimum two days.

- **We deliver it charged**, any day from 08:00 to 20:00 (09:00–15:30 during Ramadan). The courier calls or messages you on WhatsApp before arriving.

- **Join the WiFi** with the password on the card. No app, no QR code, no settings.

- **We collect it** at the end, from the same address or another one in Marrakech, or at the airport. The €50 deposit is pre-authorised on your card, not taken, and released once the router is back in good condition.

The limits, honestly

Hand-over and collection are in Marrakech only: if your trip never comes to Marrakech, a SIM or an eSIM is the practical choice. A router is one connection in one place, so a group that splits up needs one each or a second plan. The battery lasts up to 8 hours; for a full day out add a power bank (€1.90 a day). And it is a 4G router: fast, but not 5G.

## Frequently asked questions

Is there internet in Marrakech?

Yes. Maroc Telecom, Orange and inwi all cover the city with 4G, the medina included, and 5G launched in November 2025. Free WiFi is offered by almost every riad, hotel and café, although its quality varies a lot inside older buildings.

Is the internet good in Marrakech?

Mobile internet is good: Morocco ranked 39th in the world and first in Africa for mobile speed in Ookla’s index for the fourth quarter of 2025. Building WiFi is less reliable, especially in riads, where thick walls and one shared router mean the signal is often weak in the rooms.

How do I get internet in Marrakech?

There are five ways: free WiFi where you are staying, a local SIM from Maroc Telecom, Orange or inwi, [a travel eSIM](https://pocketwifimorocco.com/esim-marrakech/) bought before you fly, roaming on your home plan, or a pocket WiFi router delivered to your accommodation or the airport for €4.90 a day.

What is the best way to get internet in Marrakech?

For most visitors, a pocket WiFi router: unlimited data with no throttling, a private password-protected network, up to 10 devices on one flat price of €4.90 a day, delivered to your riad, hotel or the airport. A local SIM or small eSIM is enough for one person who only needs maps and messages.

What is the cheapest way to get internet in Marrakech?

The lowest price is a local SIM: Orange sells its prepaid SIM for 20 Dh and a 2 GB, 7-day pass costs 20 Dh, per phone, with a limited data bundle, a passport registration and a queue. The cheapest unlimited option is a shared pocket WiFi: €4.90 a day in total for up to 10 devices, which is €1.23 each per day for four people, well below the price of an unlimited eSIM each.

Is there free WiFi in Marrakech?

Yes, in most riads, hotels, cafés and restaurants, and at Menara airport. It works where you are sitting and stops at the door, and it is shared and unencrypted, so avoid banking on it.

Does Marrakech airport have WiFi?

Yes. Menara airport has free WiFi that is fine for sending a message or checking a booking. It is shared, not fast when several flights have landed, and it does not reach the taxi rank outside.

Where can I buy a SIM card in Marrakech?

At the operators’ agencies in the city, or on arrival: inwi lists a shop at Marrakech Ménara airport on its own website, and airport guides report operator counters in the baggage reclaim hall. Bring your passport: registering a SIM to an identity document is required by law in Morocco.

Will my phone work in Marrakech?

Usually, but Morocco is outside the EU roaming zone, so using your home plan can be expensive. Check your operator’s Morocco rate before you fly. For a local SIM or a travel eSIM your phone must be unlocked; a pocket WiFi works with any phone because it connects over WiFi.

Which network is best in Marrakech?

All three work well in the city. In the open Mozilla Location Service data, Maroc Telecom has the most recorded 4G cells at every one of the ten Marrakech locations we checked, for example 216 within 1 km in Guéliz against 57 for Orange and 59 for inwi, and it also has the widest coverage outside the city.

Is there 5G in Marrakech?

Yes. 5G launched in Morocco on 7 November 2025 and Marrakech is on Orange Maroc’s official list of 5G localities. You need a 5G phone and a plan that includes it; most travel eSIMs for Morocco are still 4G, and our rental routers are 4G at up to 300 Mbps.

Does Google Maps work in the Marrakech medina?

Yes, the app and the mobile connection work. In covered souks and very narrow alleys the GPS position can drift because the phone loses sight of the sky. Download the Marrakech map for offline use before you go in, and keep a connection for searching and for messaging your riad.

Is riad WiFi in Marrakech good enough to work?

Sometimes in the courtyard, often not in the rooms. Riads have thick walls and usually one router shared by all guests. If you need video calls from your room, test it on arrival and have your own mobile connection as a backup.

Do WhatsApp calls work in Marrakech?

Yes. WhatsApp messages, voice calls and video calls work in Morocco without a VPN, as do FaceTime, Zoom and Google Meet. What you need is a data connection strong enough to carry the call.

Is there internet in the Agafay desert and the Atlas near Marrakech?

Partly. 4G is recorded around Agafay village, Lalla Takerkoust and the Ouzoud falls, the Ourika valley and Imlil are patchy, and around Oukaimeden the nearest recorded Maroc Telecom cell is 6.8 km away. Download maps before leaving the city.

How much does a pocket WiFi cost in Marrakech?

€4.90 per router per day, VAT included, with unlimited data and up to 10 devices connected at once. Delivery and collection in Marrakech are free. A five-day stay costs €24.50 in total. A €50 deposit is pre-authorised on your card and released when the router is returned.

Is the pocket WiFi really unlimited?

Yes. There is no daily allowance, no total cap and no throttling at any point in the rental, and up to 10 devices can share it. Unlimited travel eSIMs, by comparison, usually limit how much you can share with other devices.

Is a pocket WiFi more private than hotel or riad WiFi?

Yes. The router creates its own password-protected WiFi network that only your devices join. Riad, café and airport WiFi are shared with everyone else in the building.

Can I get a pocket WiFi delivered today in Marrakech?

Often, yes. Same-day delivery is possible subject to availability, any day between 08:00 and 20:00 (09:00–15:30 during Ramadan). More than a third of our bookings are made on the day the router is wanted.

Can I use the pocket WiFi outside Marrakech?

Yes. It is handed over and collected in Marrakech only, but it works wherever Maroc Telecom 4G reaches: strong in cities such as Essaouira, patchy in mountain valleys such as Ourika and Imlil, and absent in the deep desert.

eSIM or pocket WiFi for Marrakech?

For most trips, a pocket WiFi: one flat price covers up to 10 devices with unlimited data and no sharing limit, it works with laptops, tablets and phones that cannot take an eSIM, and there is nothing to install. An eSIM is enough for one person with a compatible, unlocked phone and light use.
