# Does Pocket WiFi Work Everywhere in Morocco? Sahara, Atlas, Medinas

The short answer

**Almost everywhere you will actually go, yes.** A pocket WiFi in Morocco runs on the Maroc Telecom 4G network, which reaches more than 99% of the country’s population. It works in Marrakech, Fès, Casablanca, Chefchaouen, Essaouira, along the main roads and at most desert camps. Expect gaps on the climbs over the High Atlas, in the upper gorges, and on dunes with nothing around them for twenty kilometres — the masts are where the people are.

That gap between “99% of people” and “99% of the map” is the whole story, and it is the thing most connectivity guides skip. Morocco’s population lives on the coast, in the imperial cities and in the valleys. The network was built for them. Your itinerary, if it involves the Sahara or the mountains, deliberately goes where they are not.

Here is where the signal holds, where it thins out, and how to plan a trip so a dead zone costs you nothing.

## What network a pocket WiFi actually uses

A pocket WiFi — also called a MiFi or a mobile hotspot — is [a battery-powered router with a SIM already inside it](https://pocketwifimorocco.com/buy-or-rent-pocket-wifi-morocco/). It connects to a Moroccan mobile network and turns that connection into a private WiFi network that up to ten of your own devices can join: phones, laptops, tablets, a camera, a Kindle, the kids’ iPad.

The routers from [Pocket WiFi Morocco](https://pocketwifimorocco.com/) run on **Maroc Telecom 4G**, at speeds up to **300 Mbps**. Maroc Telecom is the former state operator and is consistently the strongest of the three networks outside the cities — it inherited the rural infrastructure, and it is the one that still has a mast where the others do not.

Two things worth being straight about

**The router is 4G, not 5G.** Morocco’s operators launched 5G in the major cities in November 2025, and the regulator’s target is 45% population coverage during 2026. A 4G router does not use it. In practice that matters less than it sounds: 300 Mbps is far more than a group of travellers can consume, and 4G is what is actually available on the road to Merzouga. **Coverage is not the same thing as delivery.** The router works across the whole country, but it is handed over and collected in **Marrakech only**, including [Marrakech Menara airport](https://pocketwifimorocco.com/pocket-wifi-marrakech-menara-airport/). You collect it in Marrakech and take it wherever you are going.

**Key facts from the map**

- Maroc Telecom 4G was recorded in 1,357 areas of about 10 km, against 633 for inwi and 579 for Orange (46,511 4G cells measured by Mozilla Location Service volunteers, 2015–2024).
- Tizi n'Tichka pass: 31 Maroc Telecom 4G cells recorded within 10 km, one of them at the pass itself.
- Todra gorge: 26 Maroc Telecom 4G cells within 10 km. Merzouga: 24. Zagora: 38. Erg Chigaga: none within 10 km, the nearest 23.5 km away.
- 5G launched on 7 November 2025. ANRT counted 44% of the population covered and 8,400 5G base stations at 31 March 2026. Orange Maroc lists 135 localities with 5G; the nearest one to Merzouga is Errachidia (about 100 km).
- Pocket WiFi Morocco routers use the Maroc Telecom 4G network. They do not use 5G.

Two patterns are worth internalising. First, **coverage follows people, not scenery** — the emptier and more beautiful the view, the weaker the signal, almost without exception. Second, **a pocket WiFi does not have better coverage than a phone on the same network**. Nobody can sell you signal that does not exist. What the router changes is who gets to use the signal that is there: one connection, shared by the whole group, on every device including the ones with no SIM slot.

## Does a pocket WiFi work in the Sahara?

In Merzouga, Erfoud, Rissani, M’Hamid and Zagora — yes. These are real towns with masts, and the road in from Ouarzazate is covered for most of its length.

At a desert camp it depends entirely on how far into the dunes the camp sits. Camps a short camel ride from the edge of Erg Chebbi frequently have usable 4G, and travellers do stream video from them. Camps deep in Erg Chigaga, an hour or more of 4×4 across open desert from M’Hamid, generally have nothing. Your camp operator knows the honest answer; ask them before you go, because they have watched a hundred guests try it.

The practical move

Stop treating the desert night as a coverage problem. Send the messages that need sending from Merzouga, download what you want offline, and let the camp be offline. It is genuinely better that way.

## Does it work inside the medina?

Yes — and this is where a pocket WiFi quietly earns its keep. The medinas of Marrakech and Fès are dense enough that 4G reaches into them fine; the problem there was never signal, it was that riad WiFi typically comes from one router at the far end of a courtyard behind two feet of stone wall. It reaches reception and nothing else.

Carrying your own hotspot means your room has WiFi, the roof terrace has WiFi, and the café you stopped in because you were lost has WiFi. ## How to plan around the dead zones

Five things that turn a coverage gap from a problem into a non-event.

- **Download offline maps for the whole country before you leave Marrakech.** Google Maps and Maps.me both do this. One download over the router while it is sitting on unlimited data costs you nothing, and it is the single highest-value thing on this list. - **Screenshot your bookings.** Riad address in Arabic and French, camp contact, driver’s number, return flight. A screenshot works with no signal; an email in an app does not always.

- **Download entertainment for the drives.** Marrakech to Merzouga is a long day. Because the data is unlimited with no cap and no throttling, downloading a season of something the night before costs nothing extra.

- **Charge the router, and consider the power bank.** The battery runs up to 8 hours, which is a full day of use but not a full day of a road trip plus an evening. A car charger or the optional power bank (€1.90/day) covers the gap.

- **Tell people you will be offline.** A message home saying “no signal in the desert tonight, back tomorrow” prevents the only real cost of a dead zone, which is somebody at home worrying.

## Coverage compared: pocket WiFi, eSIM and roaming

All three ride the same physical masts, so raw coverage is broadly comparable. The differences that matter are what happens to the connection when you are in a group, and what happens to your laptop.

Delivery and collection are free anywhere in Marrakech — hotels, riads, Airbnbs and the arrivals hall at Menara airport — every day from 08:00 to 20:00 (09:00 to 15:30 during Ramadan). There is a refundable €50 deposit, released when the router comes back in good condition.

## Frequently asked questions

Does pocket WiFi work everywhere in Morocco?

It works wherever the Maroc Telecom 4G network reaches, which is more than 99% of Morocco’s population — every city, every town, most villages and the main roads between them. Unpopulated terrain is the exception: the mountain roads and upper gorges have gaps, and the deep dunes often have no signal from any operator.

Will I have internet at a Sahara desert camp?

Usually yes at camps near the edge of Erg Chebbi outside Merzouga, where 4G or 3G commonly reaches. Usually no at remote camps deep in Erg Chigaga. Ask your camp operator — they know precisely, and the answer does not depend on which connectivity product you bought.

Is the connection fast enough for video calls?

In any city or town, yes — up to 300 Mbps on 4G, with no throttling at any point in the rental. On a mountain road or at the edge of the desert, expect messaging and maps rather than a stable call.

Does the router use 5G?

No. It is a 4G router, up to 300 Mbps. Morocco’s operators launched 5G in the major cities in November 2025, but coverage outside those cities is still limited and 4G is what reaches the places most travellers go.

How many devices can share one router?

Up to 10 at the same time, on one flat price. Phones, laptops, tablets, cameras — anything that joins a WiFi network, including devices with no SIM slot at all.

Where do I pick it up and drop it off?

If your Morocco trip is cities, coast and the classic desert route, a pocket WiFi will be online for effectively all of it. If your trip is built around getting somewhere remote, you will lose signal — and so would every other option, because there is no mast out there to connect to.
