The short answer

Yes, a UK phone works in Marrakech: it connects to a Moroccan network through roaming, on O2, EE, Vodafone or Three. What changes is the price. Morocco is outside every UK operator’s European zone, so you pay a daily charge of £7 to £8 on EE, Vodafone and Three, or buy a data Bolt On from £26 on O2, per phone. To avoid roaming charges on data altogether, a pocket WiFi router delivered to your riad or to Menara airport puts every phone and laptop in your group online with unlimited data for €4.90 a day in total.

This guide gives what each of the four UK networks publishes for Morocco, how to check your own plan before you fly, why a phone sometimes shows no service on arrival, and how to stay online in Marrakech without paying per phone. Every operator figure below was read on that operator’s own website or price guide on 8 October 2026. Plans differ and prices change, so confirm yours in your operator’s app before you travel.

Will my phone work in Marrakech?

Yes. Marrakech is covered in 4G by the three Moroccan operators, Maroc Telecom, Orange and inwi, and UK networks have roaming agreements with them. When you land, your phone picks one of those networks and shows its name. Calls, texts and data then work if roaming is active on your account and switched on in your phone’s settings.

Morocco is not part of the European roaming zones that UK plans include. It sits in a worldwide zone on all four networks, which is why a phone that roamed at no extra cost in Spain starts charging once you cross to Morocco.

O2 in Marrakech

O2 lists Morocco in Zone 3 of its Data Roaming Bolt Ons, the most expensive of its three zones outside Europe: £26 for 100 MB, £45 for 500 MB and £65 for 1 GB. O2 states that the Bolt Ons do not cover calls and texts: making or receiving a call outside Europe is charged at £3 a minute and sending a text costs £1. If you do not buy a Bolt On, O2 says you pay nothing for data because it stops your data abroad. The Bolt Ons are not available on Pay As You Go.

EE in Marrakech

EE’s Pay Monthly price guide places Morocco in Rest of World Zone 3. The Roaming Pass for that zone costs £7.50 a day and gives calls and texts and 500 MB of data for the day. The guide we read on EE’s website is dated 23 July 2025, so check the EE app for the charge on your plan today.

Vodafone in Marrakech

Vodafone lists Morocco among its Zone D destinations, with Egypt, India, Thailand and the UAE. Vodafone states that roaming there costs £8 a day on Pay Monthly plans that started on or after 11 August 2021, and £6 a day on plans that started before that date. A fair use limit of 25 GB a month applies to data used while roaming.

Three in Marrakech

Three lists Morocco as a Go Roam Around the World Extra destination for Pay Monthly customers. The daily roaming charge there is £7 if you joined or upgraded between 1 October 2021 and 17 December 2025, and £8 if you joined or upgraded on or after 18 December 2025. Three states that you can use up to 12 GB of your data allowance in a Go Roam destination.

What a week in Marrakech costs, per phone and per group

Seven days in Marrakech. Operator totals are the published charges above multiplied out by us; the router is our published rate, about £29 at the market rate of 8 October 2026 (€1 = £0.85).
7 days Pocket WiFi router EE Vodafone Three
1 phone €34.30 £52.50 £56 £49 or £56
2 phones €34.30 £105 £112 £98 or £112
4 phones €34.30 £210 £224 £196 or £224
Data Unlimited, shared by up to 10 devices 500 MB a day Your plan, 25 GB fair use Your plan, up to 12 GB

The daily charge is paid per phone and per day used. The router is one price for the group: a couple, a family or four friends share one unlimited connection, laptops and tablets included, for less than one phone on a daily roaming charge. On O2, 1 GB of data for the week costs £65 before any call.

How to check your own plan before you fly

  1. Open your operator’s app (My O2, EE, My Vodafone or the Three app) and look up Morocco in the roaming section. It shows the zone and the charge for your plan, which can differ from the standard figures above.
  2. Check whether a pass is included. Some plans include roaming passes for worldwide destinations and some do not. The app tells you which you have.
  3. Decide before you land. If you will not pay the daily charge, switch data roaming off in your phone’s settings before the plane lands, so the phone does not start a chargeable day on its own.
  4. Keep WhatsApp ready. Over a WiFi connection, messages and WhatsApp calls do not use roaming.

Why is my phone not working in Marrakech?

When a UK phone shows no service or no data after landing, the cause is usually one of these:

  • Data roaming is switched off in the phone’s settings. Calls may work while data does not.
  • Roaming is not active on the account, or data has been stopped by the operator. O2, for example, stops data abroad when no Bolt On has been bought.
  • The phone has not registered on a Moroccan network yet. Switching flight mode on and off, or choosing a network by hand, usually fixes it.

The step-by-step version is in phone not working in Morocco. A phone with roaming switched off still connects to WiFi, which is how most visitors use theirs.

The way to avoid roaming charges: a router for the group

No daily roaming charge

  • Leave data roaming off: every phone uses the router’s WiFi.
  • €4.90 a day in total, not £7 to £8 per phone.

Unlimited data

  • No 500 MB a day, no fair use limit, no reduced speed.
  • Maps, video calls and streaming for the whole stay.

Up to 10 devices

  • Phones, laptops and children’s tablets on one connection.
  • One price whether you are two or six.

Your number stays yours

  • Your UK SIM stays in the phone; nothing to swap or install.
  • WhatsApp keeps your number, contacts and chats.

Works with any phone

  • Locked to O2, EE, Vodafone or Three? It still joins WiFi.
  • No eSIM needed and no settings to change.

Delivered in Marrakech

  • Handed to you at your riad, hotel, villa or Menara airport, free of charge.
  • On Maroc Telecom, the network with the most recorded 4G cells in and around Marrakech.

One point to know: switching data roaming off does not stop ordinary calls. Your phone can still ring on a Moroccan network, and answering is charged at your operator’s roaming rate (O2 states £3 a minute to receive a call outside Europe). For calls home, use WhatsApp or another internet calling app over the router’s WiFi.

Other ways to get online in Marrakech

If you are one person and only need internet on one phone, an eSIM or a local SIM is an option too; the router is unlimited and shared by up to 10 devices. An eSIM needs a compatible phone that is not locked to your UK operator: the providers and their prices are in eSIM for Marrakech. A Moroccan SIM is bought in a shop with your passport and also needs an unlocked phone: see SIM card in Marrakech. Every option is compared in internet in Marrakech.

Frequently asked questions

Will my UK phone work in Marrakech?

Yes. O2 lists Morocco in Zone 3. On Pay Monthly a Data Roaming Bolt On costs £26 for 100 MB, £45 for 500 MB or £65 for 1 GB, and O2 states that calls outside Europe cost £3 a minute and texts £1. Without a Bolt On, O2 stops your data abroad. Figures read on o2.co.uk on 8 October 2026.

Why is my phone not working in Marrakech?

Usually because data roaming is switched off in the phone, roaming is not active on the account, or the phone has not registered on a Moroccan network yet. Switch flight mode on and off, check data roaming, and check your operator’s app. The phone still works on WiFi with roaming off.

Yes. WhatsApp messages and calls work over any WiFi connection with data roaming switched off, and you keep your UK number in the app. A pocket WiFi router gives you that connection wherever you are in the city.
