Yes, there is free WiFi in Marrakech, but only where you sit down: at Menara airport, in riads and hotels, and in many cafés. The airport WiFi has been free since December 2015, according to Morocco’s airports office (ONDA). We found no official source for a free public network in the streets of the medina or on Jemaa el-Fna, which is where you need a map. Official advice in the UK is to use public WiFi only for browsing; in France, to prefer your phone’s own mobile connection. A pocket WiFi router gives your group that private connection everywhere you walk, with unlimited data for €4.90 a day in total.
This guide covers where free WiFi actually works in Marrakech, how good it is, whether it is safe, and what to do in the places it does not reach. Sources are named at the end; the airport, safety and airline facts were read on 19 October 2026.
Is there free WiFi at Marrakech airport?
Yes. ONDA, the national airports office, announced that WiFi at Marrakech Menara became free on 12 December 2015, after the same service opened at Casablanca’s Mohammed V airport. To connect, you accept the terms of use on the sign-in page, then your phone, tablet or laptop is online. The press reports of that announcement were the most recent official detail we could read: ONDA’s own website blocked automated reading on 19 October 2026.
Airport WiFi is good for the first minutes: telling someone you have landed, finding your driver’s name, opening your riad’s address. It is shared by everyone who has just got off a plane, and it stops at the terminal doors. Our guide to getting online at Marrakech airport compares it with a SIM counter, an eSIM and a router delivered to your riad or hotel.
Free WiFi in riads, hotels and cafés
Almost every riad and hotel in Marrakech advertises free WiFi, and many cafés and restaurants give you the password with your order. It is free, and it is usually fine for messages. Two limits are worth knowing before you count on it.
- It stays where it is. Café WiFi works while you sit there. Riad WiFi works in the riad, and often not well in every room: thick walls and one router shared by every guest weaken it, as we explain in do riads in Marrakech have WiFi.
- It is shared. When the rooms or the terrace are full, everyone is on the same line. A video call or a photo backup at 9 pm competes with every other guest.
Is there free public WiFi in the medina or on Jemaa el-Fna?
We could not find one. On 19 October 2026 we found no official source, from the city or from an operator, for a free public WiFi network covering the medina streets, the souks or Jemaa el-Fna. Some cafés around the square have their own WiFi for customers, but that is not a network you can walk with.
This matters because the streets are exactly where you need a connection. The medina’s lanes are hard to follow without a map, taxi and ride apps need data to book, and a translation or a payment can come up anywhere. Google Maps itself works in the medina when your phone has data; what helps is in does Google Maps work in the Marrakech medina.
Is free WiFi safe to use in Marrakech?
The risk is the same in any city, and two official bodies describe it in plain terms.
- The UK National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) warns that on public WiFi, attackers on the same network can intercept or change your data. It describes “evil twin” access points that copy the name of a real café network, and says the only way to be sure is to ask the staff which network is theirs. Its advice is to use public WiFi only for browsing, and a VPN to log in to services.
- France’s official cyber-security service (cybermalveillance.gouv.fr) says, in its ten essential measures: avoid public or unknown WiFi networks, and when you are on the move prefer the 3G or 4G connection of your phone plan. If you have no choice, do nothing sensitive on public WiFi and use a VPN if you can.
In practice, keep banking, card payments and work logins for a connection you control. A pocket WiFi router is one: it uses the 4G mobile network, and its WiFi is yours alone, protected by the password printed on the card that comes with it.
Free WiFi, roaming or your own router
| Option | Where it works | Cost | Who controls the network |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pocket WiFi router up to 10 devices | Everywhere you take it: streets, souks, taxis, day trips | €4.90 a day for the whole group | You: private WiFi, password on the card |
| Airport WiFi Menara | Inside the terminal | Free | The airport; shared with every passenger |
| Riad, hotel or café WiFi | Inside the building, while you are there | Free | The owner; shared with every guest |
| Roaming on your home plan | Everywhere with signal | Depends on your operator, per phone | Your operator |
Roaming prices vary a lot by operator and by country; our roaming guide for Morocco explains how to check yours before you fly.
Does Royal Air Maroc have WiFi on board?
On most flights, not yet. In January 2025, the Moroccan business site Médias24 reported that Royal Air Maroc’s newest 787-9 Dreamliner was its first aircraft with internet for passengers, for long-haul routes, and that until then the airline only had on-board WiFi for its entertainment system. On 7 October 2026, Royal Air Maroc announced that it will fit Starlink WiFi to 41 aircraft in stages from early 2027, free for members of its Safar Flyer loyalty programme. For now, plan to be offline during the flight.
How a pocket WiFi fills the gaps
A router does what free WiFi cannot: it goes with you. We deliver it free to your riad, hotel or apartment in Marrakech, charged and switched on. Everyone joins it with the password on its card, phones and laptops alike, up to 10 devices.
- Unlimited data, with no daily allowance, no total cap and no throttling during the rental.
- A private network, not shared with strangers, on Maroc Telecom’s mobile network.
- Battery for up to 8 hours, so it lasts a day in the souks; a power bank is available as an option.
- €4.90 a day for the whole group, minimum 2 days, with a €50 refundable deposit released when the router comes back.
Keep the free WiFi for what it is good at, the riad in the evening or a café break, and let the router cover the rest of the day.
Frequently asked questions
Is there free WiFi at Marrakech airport?
Yes. ONDA, the national airports office, made WiFi at Marrakech Menara free on 12 December 2015. You accept the terms of use on the sign-in page to connect. It is shared by all passengers and works only inside the terminal.
Is there free WiFi in Marrakech?
Yes, in places where you sit down: the airport, most riads and hotels, and many cafés and restaurants, which give the password to customers. On 19 October 2026 we found no official source for a free public network in the medina streets or on Jemaa el-Fna.
Do riads in Marrakech have free WiFi?
Almost all of them advertise it. Thick walls and one router shared by every guest often make it weak in the rooms, so test it on arrival and ask before you book if you need to work.
Is it safe to use public WiFi in Morocco?
Use it with care, as anywhere. The UK National Cyber Security Centre says attackers on a public network can intercept or change your data, and France’s cybermalveillance.gouv.fr advises preferring your phone plan’s 3G or 4G connection. Keep banking and logins for a connection you control, or use a VPN.
Does Royal Air Maroc have WiFi?
On most flights, not yet. Médias24 reported in January 2025 that Royal Air Maroc’s newest long-haul 787-9 was its first aircraft with internet for passengers. On 7 October 2026 the airline announced Starlink WiFi on 41 aircraft from early 2027, free for Safar Flyer members.
What is the best alternative to free WiFi in Marrakech?
Your own mobile connection. A pocket WiFi router gives up to 10 devices unlimited data on a private network for €4.90 a day in total, delivered free to your riad, hotel or Airbnb, and it works in the streets where free WiFi does not reach.
Your own WiFi, everywhere in Marrakech
