The short answer

Marrakech works well as a remote-work base, as long as you bring your own connection. The mobile network is strong across the city and Morocco has been on GMT all year since 20 September 2026, so your working day lines up with Europe. The weak point is shared WiFi in riads, apartments and cafés. The setup that holds a video call is a pocket WiFi router: your own private 4G connection for €4.90 a day, unlimited, with no throttling, for your laptop, phone and tablet together, delivered to you in Marrakech.

This guide is for people who will open a laptop in Marrakech: a week of work between two holidays, a month as a digital nomad, or a few calls you cannot miss during a family trip. It covers what a video call really needs, how good the network is in each neighbourhood where remote workers stay, where to work, and how to set up a connection you control. We deliver routers in Marrakech every day, and the coverage figures are counted from open cell-tower data.

Is Marrakech good for remote work?

On the three things that decide it, yes.

The clock. Since 20 September 2026 Morocco stays on GMT all year, with no more clock changes. Marrakech is on London time in winter and one hour behind London in summer; it is one hour behind Paris, Madrid and Berlin in winter and two hours behind in summer. A normal European working day fits without early mornings or late nights.

The mobile network. In Ookla’s Speedtest Global Index for the fourth quarter of 2025, Morocco ranked 39th in the world for mobile speed and first in Africa. Maroc Telecom, Orange and inwi all cover Marrakech with 4G.

The catch: fixed WiFi. Morocco’s fixed broadband ranked around 105th in the same index, with a median of 56 Mbps. That line is what feeds the WiFi in your riad, apartment or café, and it is usually shared by everyone in the building. It is the part of the setup you do not control, which is why people who work here bring their own connection.

What a video call actually needs

Less than most people think, and the number that matters is upload: the direction your face and your screen travel.

Bandwidth Zoom lists for each kind of call (upload / download), read on Zoom’s support site on 7 October 2026.
Kind of call Upload Download
One-to-one video, high quality 600 kbps 600 kbps
One-to-one video, 720p HD 1.2 Mbps 1.2 Mbps
Group video, 720p HD 2.6 Mbps 1.8 Mbps
Group video, 1080p HD 3.8 Mbps 3.0 Mbps
Screen sharing, with video thumbnail 50–150 kbps

A call needs single-digit megabits. What breaks calls is not peak speed but a connection that is shared and unstable: a line divided between twelve rooms at nine in the evening, or a café router with thirty phones on it. A router with its own mobile connection, serving only your devices, removes that problem.

The network where remote workers stay

We counted the 4G cells recorded within one kilometre of each area, for each network. A cell is one antenna sector on a mast; more cells means more capacity and fewer dead corners.

4G cells recorded within 1 km of each point (2 km for the Palmeraie). Mozilla Location Service open export, measurements 2015–2024. Networks have added masts since, so read these as a floor, not a ceiling.
Area Maroc Telecom Orange inwi Why people work there
GuélizPlace du 16 Novembre 216 57 59 The modern centre: apartments, cafés and the coworking spaces
Train station 197 52 44 On the edge of Guéliz
Jemaa el-Fna and the souks 147 133 59 Riads in the medina
Jardin Majorelle 136 32 41 Around the garden, north of central Guéliz
Palmeraie 126 35 49 Villas outside the centre
Hivernage 92 33 36 Hotels between Guéliz and the medina

Maroc Telecom has the most recorded cells at every one of these points, and our routers run on Maroc Telecom. In practice the mobile signal is strong in all six areas; what changes from one address to the next is the building’s own WiFi.

Where to work in Marrakech

Your riad, apartment or villa

Most remote workers spend most of their hours here. A riad is built to keep heat out: thick walls, rooms around a courtyard, often three floors, usually one router near reception and one line shared by every guest. The usual complaint is that the WiFi works in the courtyard and not in the room, and that evenings are worst. Test it from your room on the first day, and keep your own connection on the desk for calls.

Coworking spaces in Guéliz

Marrakech has coworking spaces, concentrated in Guéliz. The coworking directory workin.space listed two of them when we checked on 7 October 2026: L’Blassa, on Rue Tariq Bnou Ziad, at 150 MAD per day excluding VAT, open Monday to Friday from 9:00 to 18:00, and CWC Hub, on Rue Mohammed el Beqal, at 120 MAD per day, with the same weekday hours. Those are the directory’s figures, not ours: confirm the price and the opening hours with the space before you go.

Cafés and terraces

Guéliz and the medina are full of cafés with WiFi, and they are pleasant for writing and email. For a call, café WiFi is the least predictable connection in the city, because you share it with everyone else in the room. With a router in your bag the café only has to supply the coffee and the socket.

Why a pocket WiFi is the best setup for working

A connection that is yours alone

  • Its own 4G line, serving only your devices: no neighbours streaming on it at nine in the evening.
  • The same connection for the 10:00 call and the 21:00 upload.

Your laptop connects directly

  • No tethering through a phone all day, so your phone keeps its battery.
  • Laptop, phone and tablet online together, up to 10 devices.

Unlimited, with no throttling

  • No daily allowance and no total cap: long calls, cloud backups and big files do not use anything up.
  • The speed on the last day is the speed on the first.

A private network for work

  • Password-protected and not shared with other guests, unlike riad or café WiFi.
  • A sensible place for company logins, banking and client files.

Your office moves with you

  • Riad in the morning, coworking after lunch, terrace at sunset: everything reconnects to the same network name.
  • It keeps working on a weekend in Essaouira or the Atlas, wherever Maroc Telecom has 4G.

Two connections, not one

  • Keep the building’s WiFi as a spare: a bad evening on one is not a missed call.
  • Nothing to install and no SIM to swap, so your own number stays in your phone.

What it costs for a working stay

The rate is €4.90 per router per day, VAT included, with free delivery and collection in Marrakech. It does not change with the number of devices or the amount of data.

Our published rates on 7 October 2026, one router. The €50 deposit is pre-authorised, not taken, and released when the router comes back in good condition.

A working week, 5 days €24.50 €34.00
7 days €34.30 €47.60
10 days €49.00 €68.00
14 days €68.60 €95.20

Setting up your desk

  • Put the router near a window or on the terrace. The thick walls that block the riad’s WiFi also block 4G. Moving the router a metre often does more than any setting.
  • Keep it plugged in while you work. The battery lasts up to 8 hours, which covers a working day, but there is no reason to spend it at your desk. Take it out charged.
  • Use the building’s WiFi as the spare. Two independent connections are what make a call safe.
  • Test before the first call. Open a video call with a colleague from the exact chair you will use.
  • Take a power bank on days out. It is €1.90 a day and covers a long day away from a socket.
Calls on WhatsApp

Voice and video calls on WhatsApp work in Morocco without a VPN. We tested it on our own routers: see do WhatsApp calls work in Morocco.

Working from a day trip or a weekend away

The router works across Morocco, so a long weekend does not have to be offline. These are the Maroc Telecom 4G cells recorded within 10 km of the places people go from Marrakech, from the same open data:

  • Essaouira: 110 cells, rated strong on our coverage map. Everything works, so it can be a second base for a few working days by the sea.
  • Lalla Takerkoust lake: 25 cells, with 4G recorded at the village. We have not rated it yet.
  • Agafay desert: 19 cells, with 4G recorded in the area. Camps are spread out, so ask yours before you plan a call there.
  • Ourika valley: 6 cells, rated patchy. Maps and WhatsApp in the villages.
  • Imlil: 4 cells, rated patchy. Maps and WhatsApp in the village, little on the trails. Plan Atlas days as days off.

Frequently asked questions

Is Marrakech good for remote work?

Yes, if you bring your own connection. Morocco is on GMT all year since 20 September 2026, so the working day lines up with Europe, and the mobile network is strong across the city. Shared WiFi in riads, apartments and cafés is the unreliable part.

Is the internet in Marrakech good enough for video calls?

Mobile internet is. Zoom lists 2.6 Mbps of upload for a 720p group call, and Morocco ranked 39th in the world for mobile speed in Ookla’s index for the fourth quarter of 2025. Building WiFi is less reliable, because one line is usually shared by every guest.

What is the best internet setup for working remotely in Marrakech?

A pocket WiFi router as your main connection, with the building’s WiFi as a spare. The router gives your laptop, phone and tablet their own private 4G connection with unlimited data and no throttling, for €4.90 a day.

Can I rely on riad or Airbnb WiFi for work?

As a spare, yes; as your only connection, no. Riads have thick walls and usually one router shared by all the guests, so the signal is often weak in the rooms and slowest in the evening. Test it from your room on the first day.

Are there coworking spaces in Marrakech?

Yes, mostly in Guéliz. The directory workin.space listed L’Blassa at 150 MAD per day excluding VAT and CWC Hub at 120 MAD per day when we checked on 7 October 2026. Confirm prices and opening hours with the space.

Which neighbourhood has the best mobile signal for working?

All the areas where visitors stay are well covered. Guéliz has the most recorded Maroc Telecom 4G cells within one kilometre, 216, ahead of the train station area with 197.

Can I connect my work laptop to a pocket WiFi?

Yes. The router creates a normal password-protected WiFi network, so a laptop joins it like any other WiFi, with nothing to install. Up to 10 devices can be connected at once.

Is the data really unlimited for work?

Yes. There is no daily allowance, no total cap and no throttling at any point in the rental, so long calls and large uploads do not use anything up.

What time zone is Marrakech in?

GMT all year, since 20 September 2026. It is the same time as London in winter and one hour behind in summer, and one hour behind Paris in winter and two in summer.

How much does a pocket WiFi cost for a month in Marrakech?

The list rate is €4.90 per day, €68.60 for two weeks. For three weeks or more we quote individually instead of multiplying the daily rate: email contact@pocketwifimorocco.com or WhatsApp +212 6 23 11 25 18 for a long-stay price.

Does the router work if I travel around Morocco at the weekend?

Yes. It works across Morocco wherever Maroc Telecom has 4G coverage. It is delivered and collected in Marrakech.
