The short answer

Yes, tourists can drink alcohol in Morocco, in licensed venues: licensed hotels, restaurants and bars serve it. Drinking in the street, or anywhere other than a licensed restaurant or bar, is illegal and can lead to arrest, according to the UK government’s travel advice. In Marrakech that means a drink on a hotel terrace or in a licensed restaurant is fine, and a bottle in the square is not. Finding which places are licensed is something you look up, so it helps to be online.

This page sets out the alcohol rules as stated in the UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) travel advice for Morocco on gov.uk, last reviewed on 19 August 2026 and read on 12 October 2026, plus what they mean in Marrakech: where you can drink, what changes in Ramadan, the drink-driving rule and the methanol warning.

The law in one paragraph

The FCDO states: alcohol is available in licensed venues. Drinking alcohol in the street and anywhere other than a licensed restaurant or bar is illegal and can lead to arrest. Morocco is an Islamic country, and the same advice asks visitors to respect local traditions, customs, laws and religions at all times.

Where you can drink in Marrakech

  • Licensed hotels and their bars and restaurants.
  • Licensed restaurants and bars.
  • Not in the street, squares or parks. That includes Jemaa el-Fna.
  • Riads vary. It depends on whether the riad holds a licence. Ask yours before you book if it matters to you.

A venue being licensed is not something you can see from the door. Check the menu or the listing online, or message the restaurant before you walk across the medina.

During Ramadan

Ramadan next starts in February 2027. The FCDO states that during Ramadan, eating or drinking in public in the daytime may cause offence, that hotels and restaurants serving food or drink in fasting hours may separate you from Muslim guests, for example with screens, and that you should check the opening hours of shops and restaurants. Our guide to Ramadan 2027 in Morocco covers the dates.

Methanol warning

The FCDO reports deaths and cases of serious illness in Morocco caused by alcoholic drinks containing methanol. Even small amounts can kill, and methanol cannot be identified by taste or smell. Drink in licensed venues and seek urgent medical attention if someone shows signs of methanol poisoning after drinking.

Drink-driving

The FCDO states that drink-driving is a serious offence in Morocco: if you are tested and found to have any alcohol in your system, you will get a fine and possible imprisonment. If you have hired a car, do not drink at all before driving.

Drugs are a different matter

Morocco has a zero-tolerance approach to drugs. The FCDO states that possessing, using or trafficking illegal drugs, including cannabis, are serious offences with severe penalties, and that you should expect a long jail sentence and heavy fines.
