British citizens can visit Morocco without a visa for up to 90 days, with a passport that expires at least 3 months after the day they arrive. The passport must be undamaged and should be stamped on entry. These are the rules the UK government publishes for British passport holders; other nationalities should check with a Moroccan consulate. Once you are through the border at Marrakech Menara, a pocket WiFi router can be waiting in the arrivals hall, so your group is online before the taxi rank.
This page sets out the entry rules for Morocco as published in the UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) travel advice for Morocco on gov.uk, last reviewed on 19 August 2026 and read on 12 October 2026: passport validity, the visa-free stay, what to declare, and what catches travellers out. The Moroccan authorities set and enforce these rules, and they can change, so check the official page again shortly before you fly.
Passport rules for Morocco
- Validity. Your passport must have an expiry date at least 3 months after the date you arrive.
- Condition. The passport must not be damaged. The FCDO states that the Moroccan authorities have denied entry to some travellers with damaged passports.
- Entry stamp. Border officials should stamp your passport when you enter. Some travellers have had difficulties leaving Morocco because their passport had no entry stamp, so check before you walk away from the desk.
- Lost or stolen passports. You need an emergency travel document from the British embassy and a police report to leave the country. The loss or theft must be reported in the city where it happened.
- Do not post a passport. It is illegal to send passports by post to or through Morocco, and the authorities confiscate British passports sent by post or courier.
Do you need a visa for Morocco?
For tourism, British citizens can visit Morocco without a visa for up to 90 days. To stay longer than 90 days you must request an extension at a Moroccan police station. If you are travelling for reasons other than tourism, check the visa requirements with the Moroccan Consulate General in the UK.
The figures on this page are the UK government’s advice for people travelling on a full British citizen passport. If you hold another passport, the stay and the validity rule can differ: check with the Moroccan embassy or consulate in your country, or your own government’s travel advice, before you book.
Customs and money rules
- Declare large amounts of cash. You must declare foreign currency worth 100,000 Moroccan dirham or more (around £8,000) when you enter or leave the country.
- The dirham is a closed currency. It cannot easily be exchanged outside Morocco, so most visitors change money or use a cash machine after they land.
- Goods. There are strict rules about what you can take into or out of Morocco, and anything that may be prohibited or taxed must be declared.
- Drones. You need permission from Morocco’s Directorate General for Civil Aviation to fly a drone; without it you risk a fine and confiscation.
- Polio certificate. You need a certificate of polio vaccination if you are coming from a polio-affected country.
Driving into Morocco or hiring a car
The FCDO states that you need both the 1968 version of the international driving permit and your UK driving licence in the car, and that Morocco no longer accepts the 1949 version. You cannot buy the permit outside the UK, so get it before you travel. More on the road rules in driving in Morocco.
After the border: getting online at Menara
Passport control at Marrakech Menara is the last formality. What most visitors need next is a connection: to message the riad, find the driver or open the booking with the address. The free airport WiFi stops at the terminal door, and a local SIM is registered to your passport at a counter, one per person.
