The short answer

In Marrakech, wear loose, light clothing that covers your shoulders and knees: it is the respectful choice and also the coolest one in the sun. The UK government’s travel advice suggests that women consider loose-fitting clothing which covers the arms, legs and chest. There is no legal dress code for visitors. What changes through the year is the temperature: 39°C afternoons in July, 5°C nights in January. Comfortable closed shoes matter more than anything else, because you will walk the medina with a map in your hand.

This page combines the dress advice in the UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) travel advice for Morocco on gov.uk, last reviewed on 19 August 2026 and read on 12 October 2026 with the weather for each part of the year, calculated from ten years of daily data, so you can pack for the month you are going.

Loose and lightcooler in the sun than bare skin
5°Caverage January night: pack a warm layer
39°Caverage July afternoon: hat and sunscreen

What the official advice says

  • Respect local customs. The FCDO states that Morocco’s laws and customs reflect the fact that it is an Islamic country, and asks visitors to respect local traditions and to make sure their actions do not offend, especially during Ramadan or when visiting religious areas.
  • Women. Women may receive unwanted attention, especially when travelling alone. The advice is to consider wearing loose-fitting clothing which covers the arms, legs and chest.
  • During Ramadan, follow local dress codes: clothing that does not meet them may cause more offence at this time. Ramadan next starts in February 2027.

What to wear in Marrakech as a woman

Loose trousers, long skirts or dresses, and tops that cover the shoulders and chest work everywhere in the city. A light scarf is useful for sun, dust and the occasional religious site; covering your hair is not expected of visitors. Swimwear is for the pool. In hotels and restaurants in the modern districts dress is more relaxed than in the medina.

What to wear in Marrakech as a man

Long, light trousers and a T-shirt or shirt are right everywhere. Shorts to the knee are common among visitors; sleeveless tops are out of place in the medina.

What to wear month by month

Average daily highs and night-time lows for Marrakech, 2015–2024, calculated by us, with what to pack. The clothing suggestions are ours.
When Temperature What to pack

March and April 23–26°C by day, 9–12°C at night Light layers, a cardigan or light jacket, a light rain jacket
May, June, September, October 30–33°C by day, 15–18°C at night Loose cotton or linen that covers shoulders and knees, a hat, a light layer for the evening
July and August 38–39°C by day, 21°C at night The lightest loose long clothing you own, a wide hat, sunglasses, sunscreen
November 24°C by day, 10°C at night Layers: warm in the sun, cool as soon as it sets

Shoes, evenings and day trips

  • Shoes. Closed, comfortable and already worn in. The medina is uneven, dusty and shared with handcarts and scooters.
  • Evenings. Nights average about 15 degrees cooler than afternoons all year, and roof terraces are breezy. Bring a layer even in spring and autumn.
  • Atlas day trips. It is cooler in the mountains. The official advice for hikers is to pack water, sunscreen and appropriate clothing and to hire a professional guide.
  • A bag that closes. Bag-snatching is listed as common in the medina; wear the strap across your body.

The other thing to carry: your connection

You will walk more than you expect, and navigate all of it by phone. A pocket WiFi router is the size of a phone and goes in the same bag.
